Sustainability Meets Luxury at Treetops Lodge & Estate
An Elevated Commitment to Responsible Luxury Travel

Written By: - 28 Jul, 2025

Since opening in 2001, Treetops has quietly led the way in regenerative tourism. Today, it takes another leap forward—introducing a new wave of community-driven and socially-conscious sustainability initiatives that amplify its commitment to both people and planet.

Architectural Harmony with Nature
From the beginning, Treetops was designed as a sanctuary both for guests and the natural world. The lodge was constructed using native timber felled and milled on site, minimising impact while maximising integration with the land. Its 14 intimate guest villas and rooms are built with passive solar orientation, high insulation, low-heat glass, and heat-recycling systems—all aligned with the estate’s founding principle: luxury without compromise.

Four wetland habitats and an integrated micro-hydro power system allow the estate to be largely energy self-sufficient. Native bird species and trout populations have steadily returned to these regenerated ecosystems. Meanwhile, the water flowing from every tap and shower is scientifically verified as New Zealand’s purest natural spring water.

Estate to Plate: Pure, Organic Cuisine
Dining at Treetops is a true “Estate to Plate” experience. Every ingredient—whether it’s organic produce from the lodge gardens, wild game from on-site safaris, or foraged Māori medicinal herbs—is either grown, gathered, or harvested locally. Meals are 100% pesticide-free and curated with environmental mindfulness and culinary flair. Guests can even participate in seasonal foraging or attend the renowned Wild Food Cooking School.

Nature’s Playground, Guided by Locals
Adventure here is immersive, but never intrusive. Guests explore 70km (35 miles) of private trails, participate in 4WD wildlife safaris, or visit working Manuka honey hives. Treetops also offers a rich cultural experience through guided Māori spa therapies, food trails, and poi-making workshops led by local iwi (tribe).

Treetops believes sustainability is a social endeavour. The lodge actively supports micro-enterprises such as artisan crafts made from 5,000-year-old swamp Kauri, and employs local talent throughout its operations—from conservation guides to cultural educators.

A Global Model for Regenerative Travel
With over 250,000 habitat-enhancing plants in the ground—and counting—Treetops goes beyond carbon neutrality. For every guest who journeys to the lodge, their carbon footprint has already been offset through on-site reforestation and intensive predator control programs.

It’s no wonder Treetops Lodge has received multiple recognitions from the World Travel Awards for Responsible Tourism, and been named a Top Family Resort by Elite Magazine (USA).

Experience Responsible Luxury
Treetops isn’t just a lodge—it’s a vision of what travel should be: authentic, intimate, environmentally responsible, and deeply luxurious.
